Listen to the Autumn King – A Red Deer Rut Experience in Kočevsko

After enjoying an autumn picnic basket filled with local delicacies, you will quietly make your way to a forest listening point.

Programme itinerary
The experience begins in Kočevje, where your guide will introduce the programme, explain the characteristics of the red deer rut and present the rules for quiet and responsible movement in the forest.
You will then travel into the extensive forests of Kočevsko. During the guided exploration, you will look for and interpret tracks and other signs left by wild animals.
You will also review selected camera-trap footage, offering an insight into the hidden life of the forest without revealing the animals’ exact locations. Before the evening part of the programme, you will enjoy a specially prepared autumn picnic basket featuring local delicacies and hot tea.
As daylight begins to fade, you will quietly make your way towards the forest listening point. There, you will listen to the deep roaring of red deer, movement in the leaf litter and the other sounds of the nocturnal forest. A thermal camera and night-vision equipment will help you detect activity in the darkness without using lights, while a directional microphone will bring more distant sounds closer.
The exact timing of each part of the programme may be adjusted according to the date, weather conditions, sunset time and the current intensity of the rut.
